Student InterviewDepartment of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

Hello. I am a second-year PhD student in the Structural Integrity Laboratory. I continued into the doctoral program from the master program. My current research focuses on investigating the behavior of nonlinear waves as they propagate along a thin, elastic floating plate in shallow water, aiming to contribute to improved engineering designs and the safe operation of very large floating structures exposed to extreme waves. I am happy to be living in Japan, where I can experience Japanese culture. Moreover, being an international student at Osaka University is a lifelong source of pride for me. Osaka University offers extensive support, not only for academic research but also for daily life, with free Japanese language courses and various student activities. I am grateful for the chance to meet kind people and to feel part of a warm community at the university.

I am currently a specially appointed researcher here. I started to join the PhD course under Maritime and Urban Engineering, three years ago and I graduated this year. I was one of the participants of the Sakura Science Program 2016, held by OU. At this moment, I had a chance to learn about campus life, laboratories and some research topics. Starting from this time, I am interested in studying under this program. I have studied the underwater dynamic behavior of the drill pipe in the Marine Hydro-science and Engineering Laboratory. It was a really great experience of my life doing research here. In my opinion, the flexible guidance of the professor according to the students’ ability and the teaching and learning facilities would be the most impressive expression of the student life.

From the perspective of an international student, I am particularly impressed by the reputation of the University of Osaka, as one of the leading institutions in Japan. The research facilities and comprehensive laboratories available to students are truly exceptional. The support from faculty members, as well as the resources provided, has played a crucial role in shaping my career trajectory and advancing my research. I have acquired a wealth of knowledge, which has also deepened my understanding of my specific research area. The program has not only expanded my knowledge base but also nurtured my intellectual curiosity. The positive experiences I have had here further strengthen my desire to continue contributing to my field and pursue opportunities in Japan after graduation. I am confident that everyone will gain valuable experiences, both academically and personally, during their time here.

I am a student from Syria. One of the best universities in Japan, the University of Osaka, has given me the amazing chance to carry out my Master’s and PhD researches on Aleppo, my favorite city. I have been greatly encouraged by the advice of knowledgeable professors, the enthusiasm of my fellow classmates and the laboratory environment at the university. I'm keen on continuing my studies and broadening my understanding to have a significant influence in the future.
My aspiration is to serve as a bridge, connecting Japan’s remarkable experience in recovery and development after World War II, with the ongoing efforts to rebuild Syria. By drawing on Japan’s innovative approaches, resilience, and expertise, I hope to adapt and implement these lessons to address the unique challenges faced by my homeland.

The International Program of Maritime and Urban Engineering at the University of Osaka provides a unique environment and endorses interdisciplinary research. Additionally, its international nature attracts students from diverse backgrounds, creating an inclusive and supportive environment.
The highlight of the program is the Exercise on Global Architecture class. During this project-based class, with the support of the professors, we could engage with the local community, NGOs, and governmental bodies. Meanwhile, teams joining students from different departments collaborated to develop sustainable urban development strategies for Post-Expo 2025. I believe that this class displays the heart of the program. It involves students from different departments creating one well-made proposal.
Today, I am working at OU as a specially appointed assistant professor in the Architectural and Urban Design Studies Lab. The interdisciplinary and international training at OU gave me the foundation to contribute to global research on carbon-neutral cities.
